The First Cab in the City - Henderson Brewing Company
Henderson Brewing’s Ides Series is a monthly small-batch special release series experimenting with creative recipes. Ides of June 2020 is called The City Traditional Ale, and it celebrates the inspiring story of Thornton and Lucie Blackburn.
“This month’s release tells the story of Thornton Blackburn and his wife Lucie, who escaped slavery in Louisville, and made their way to Toronto in 1834. By 1837, he had built the city’s first taxi, a red-and-yellow horse-drawn box cab called ‘The City’, and the business thrived.”
The red and yellow colour scheme of Blackburn’s horse-drawn cab eventually inspired the official colour scheme of the TTC.
The beer was brewed in the style of a traditional 19th-century ale, the kind that the Blackburns might have enjoyed after a hard day’s work. It was released for Juneteenth, with all profits donated to the Black Business and Professional Association’s fund to support Toronto’s Little Jamaica community.
The City is a traditional English style pale ale, pouring a cloudy copper colour with aromas of caramel, brown sugar, and orange. The palate delivers resinous caramel sweetness and pine upfront. It’s expectedly malt forward with flavours of graham cracker, cooked brown sugar and orange rind. The mid-palate is oaky and peppery. On the back-end, there’s more resinous sweetness along with some lingering pithy bitterness. Overall it’s complex and very well balanced.
