Vox Populi Make Their LCBO Debut with Double Fruit Punch IPA
Montreal’s Microbrasserie Vox Populi are a common sight on the Québec craft beer scene. They’ve got a broad and colourful lineup of short cans including their nut brown ale Hazel, a stout series with variations such as Chocolat, Café and Coconut, a Brunch Berliner Weisse and an IPA series called IPA Démocratique where customers would vote online for the feature hop of the next version (not to mention their special bottled and barrel aged treats).
Vox Populi are crossing provincial lines into Ontario, bringing their Double Fruit Punch IPA to LCBO shelves! It’s been a couple of years since I last had it, so it was nice to have a revisit. Pouring a dark coppery orange, the nose delivers as you might expect, a big punch of tropical fruit, big on pineapple and papaya. The flavours are anything but delicate, sitting at 8% ABV and 100 IBU. There’s a thick caramel malt backbone, which is cut by a rush of juicy pineapple along with candied lemon and orange rind. The finish is intensely bitter, delivering more citrus zest along with a resinous and piney contrast. The mouthfeel is sticky and sweet, almost sappy.
For all its bold flavours, they come together quite nicely. Though undeniably juicy, it is not a run of the mill hype-haze IPA. If you’ve been longing for an IPA that delivers something more aggressive along with a contrast of sweetness, bitterness and pine, this might be what you’ve been waiting for. Look for it on LCBO shelves starting this month!
PS. Selling beer in another province is no simple feat! Our friends Chris and Max over at Hops & Bros break it down.
