Radicle Hopfenweisse - Henderson Brewing Company

Toronto’s Henderson Brewing Company jumped into July with the latest from their monthly Ides series, a Hopfenweisse called Radicle, named for the first part of a seedling to emerge from a seed.  Hopfenweisse is a true hybrid style, and not one that is prominently brewed, at least in my experience. I could probably count on both hands the number of different Hopfenweisse I’ve tried, which would include Beau’s Wag the Wolf (now listed as a White IPA), Dominion City’s Heart City, Tooth and Nail’s Birds of Prey, and one which I definitely didn’t even realize was a Hopfenweisse the first time I tried it, the famous Shawinigan Handshake from Trou du Diable (or at least Hopfenweisse-inspired as they describe it).

While the style combines the flavour profiles of German wheat beers and American hops, Henderson put a contemporary twist on it by leaning towards the New England end of the spectrum in terms of hop profile and mouthfeel.  It pours with a thick, milky haze with a tiny bit of sandy sediment.  The weizen ale yeast gives off a wheaty, slightly grassy nose alongside pineapple and banana esters.  It has a massively creamy mouthfeel with a wheaty grain bill and a palate dominated by banana, pineapple, bubblegum and clovey spice.  I realized after tasting that the hop combo includes Sabro, which even though I didn’t taste the coconut flavour it’s most commonly known for, could definitely be contributing to the incredibly creamy and velvety smooth feel of this one.  The prominent flavours of banana and pineapple combined with the super creamy texture almost make it drink like a fruit smoothie.  Like a milkshake IPA without the lactose!

The Ides series celebrates the history of Toronto and its people.  Radicle was brewed in celebration of the 59th annual Toronto Outdoor Art Fair, and the can label features the artwork of Steven Restagno, last year’s winner of the Best of Student Award.

Radicle is currently still available at Henderson’s retail store and online bottle shop along with their sexy new stemless glassware.

Thanks as always to Michelle for hooking me up with Ides of July 2020!
