LOOP Bring Their Food Sustainability Mission (and Sour Beers) to Toronto

Montreal based LOOP Mission is all about “repurposing the outcasts of the food industry”. They take would-be food waste such as day-old bread and imperfect (therefore less saleable) fruits and vegetables and turn them into cold-pressed juices and smoothies, sparkling water kefirs, soaps, even beer and liquor! To fully “close the loop”, they give the unused high-fibre pulp from their products to fellow Montreal business Wilder & Harrier who turn it into dog treats. Until very recently their beers were only available in Québec, but they’ve now partnered with Toronto’s Junction Craft Brewery, using day-old bread from Rudolph’s Bakery, to bring their lineup of sour beers to the Ontario market. They kindly sent the three beers from their lineup being launched in Ontario for me to try, so let’s see what they’ve got!

Hoppy Sour

Light Sour Beer with Pineapple - 3.5%

The Hoppy Sour pours clear and slightly cloudy with a thin dissipating head, which is not surprising considering the acidity of real pineapple. The flavour of juicy pineapple is definitely present but not heavily acidic or in your face, in fact it’s quite well restrained. The level of sour is very approachable. The malt bill is present too, giving it a nice bready background. It’s got some notable hop flavour as well emparting a bit of earthiness, just a touch of bitterness, and some very mild peppery spice.

Berliner Weisse

Light Sour Beer with Strawberry - 3.5%

The Berliner Weisse pours like freshly squeezed fruit juice with a hazy pinkish colour. The nose is like that of a strawberry Italian soda. On the palate it’s full-on fresh strawberry. It’s fizzy like a cocktail with soda. It’s got a very natural tartness, and a mellow wheat malt profile. It’s super refreshing.

Gose

Light Sour Beer with Lime and Coriander - 3.5%

The Gose is light like the others with a frothy effervescence. It’s salty but not over the top, just enough to keep you thirsty as you drink it. There’s a nice cut of fresh lime and a very faint savoury hint with the coriander. Like the others, the fruit component tastes super fresh, there’s a really solid bready malt base, and the level of sour is perfectly approachable

LOOP has an inspiring mission of food sustainability, and the wide range of products they’ve managed to create with that mission in mind is impressive.  Overall, these sour beers are light, refreshing, and taste like the fresh fruits they’re made with.  Through reviewing their products, I noticed that they also have a lineup of three Milkshake beers (Cherry Dragonfruit, Mango Coco, and Orange Vanilla) made with a discarded product of milk ultrafiltration called permeate.  They even created a whole new sustainable way to be members of #TeamLactose!

Check out LOOP Mission’s products on their web store with free shipping to Québec and Ontario, or grab their sour beers at Junction Craft Brewery’s bottle shop or web store with free same-day local delivery.
